Today, enthusiasm in the media and on social media is immense. From livestock farmers to environmental organisations, surf clubs to banks, and from the province of Groningen to the French border, the call for deposit return systems was heard, in order to keep our nature clean.
Environmental organisation Recycling Netwerk Benelux enthusiastically joins this new encouraging campaign by the Statiegeldalliantie (Deposit Alliance).
The Statiegeldalliantie has already achieved great success. On 1 July next year, there will be a deposit on all plastic bottles in the Netherlands, thanks to the government's decision in April. A similar decision-making process is underway for cans. The Statiegeldalliantie encourages the Dutch government to make the decision for cans during this governing period.
In Belgium, the Walloon, Brussels and federal governments have all included a deposit on cans and plastic bottles in their coalition agreements. The Statiegeldalliantie encourages them to quickly translate this into laws and decrees.
At the European level, beverage producers' federations have now declared that they are ending their years of opposition to deposit systems and now support well-designed deposit return schemes. In fact, 10 European countries have decided to introduce or expand deposit systems over the past four years. Multiple opinion polls consistently confirm that 8 out of 10 Dutch people and 8 out of 10 Belgians support deposit systems on cans and plastic bottles.
“People want deposits. Businesses and municipalities want them. Beverage producers agree. And in the political world, there is a lot of goodwill to make deposit schemes a reality. That is precisely why it is so interesting that all those municipalities, organisations and businesses are now encouraging politicians to take the final step: putting deposits on cans and all plastic bottles into law. Deposit, Yes We Can!”, concludes Recycling Netwerk Benelux.
