Invitation: Three Years of Weaving Errors Meeting
Platform Weeffouten has now been in existence for three years. It is time to take stock. Where do we stand after those three years? How do we move forward? On Friday afternoon, 31 October, we are therefore organising a networking event from 15:00 to 18:00 at UCo in Utrecht. We will present our manifesto containing all our lessons and ideas so far, and look forward to looking ahead with you and our ever-growing network.

As Fair Resource Foundation, we work towards a world in which we use fewer resources. Sustainable production and consumption are the standard, and pollution is effectively eliminated. But is that actually possible with current environmental policy? Is it as fair and effective as it needs to be? We see that Dutch environmental policy is systematically hampered by deep structural flaws in the policy-making process. As a result, the final policy is often less just and effective than necessary. The result: pollution that harms people and nature. We call these structural flaws design flaws, and they frustrate us. Together with Natuur en Milieufederatie Noord-Holland, Transparency International Netherlands and Corporate Europe Observatory, we started the Platform Weeffouten (Design Flaws Platform) three years ago. We began researching which design flaws occur in practice, and where and how these design flaws come to the surface. We spoke with residents living near polluting industries, who experience the consequences in practice. We got in touch with politicians and policymakers: they must remedy the design flaws. We identified four design flaws: Non-transparent lobbying, Toleration policy undermines legislation, Questioning of science, Out-of-balance public consultation. The Platform Weeffouten has now existed for three years. It is time to take stock. Where do we stand after these three years? How do we move forward? We are increasingly aware of the design flaws, and at the same time, change requires a lot of attention and continuous action from all of us. On Friday afternoon, 31 October, we are therefore organising a networking event from 15:00 to 18:00 at UCo in Utrecht. We will present our manifesto containing all lessons and ideas so far, and we look forward to looking ahead with you and our ever-growing network. With the main question: what can we do to accelerate and continue tackling these design flaws together? Programme We will start with the presentation of the Design Flaws Manifesto and also look back briefly on an—undoubtedly—eventful election week. After that, we will get to work in four groups, each focusing on one of the design flaws. You can choose which design flaw session to join. There will be two rounds. For each design flaw, we are collaborating with a partner who will address the issue from their own perspective. And there will be plenty of room for discussion about the future: who needs to do what? Design flaw 1: Non-transparent Lobbying – with journalist Karlijn Kuipers (NRC) Design flaw 2: Toleration policy undermines legislation – with lawyer Sem Bakker of the green legal network Recht voor Klimaat Design flaw 3: Dealing with science – with Rosanne Edelenbosch on behalf of the Rathenau Instituut Design flaw 4: Out-of-balance public consultation – with Mirjam Melse on the new Environmental Crime programme of Fonds Slachtofferhulp. Naturally, we will conclude with a plenary session and some drinks and snacks. Location Utrecht Community (UCo) 2e Daalsedijk 6a 3551 EJ Utrecht Route Forward this!
