Earlier research by Dirk Groot showed that cans end up in nature even more than plastic bottles. The draft deposit return scheme as it currently stands only addresses a limited part of the beverage packaging in litter. If pieces of beverage cans end up in cow feed during mowing, this can lead to illness or death of the cattle. And there is plastic on the inside of beverage cans, as demonstrated by the experiment of environmental organisation Recycling Netwerk on Monday.

The MPs from the GroenLinks, Partij voor de Dieren, and SP parties argue that beverage cans should also be included in the deposit return law.

The first motion by Suzanne Kröger (GroenLinks), supported by MPs Frank Wassenberg (Partij voor de Dieren) and Cem Laçin (SP), requests the government to also include plastic beverage packaging coated with a layer of tin in the deposit return scheme.

The second motion by Suzanne Kröger requests the government to set a concrete reduction target for the share of cans in litter, and to monitor this annually. This motion was also supported by MPs Wassenberg and Laçin.

The motion by Frank Wassenberg and Cem Laçin requests the government to prepare an amendment decree to also make a deposit on cans possible, alongside the decision on deposits for plastic bottles.

A motion came from the governing parties by ChristenUnie MP Dik-Faber, supported by D66 and CDA. The motion by Dik-Faber requests the government "to map the amount of plastic in the environment as a result of cans in litter, based on data from the ongoing study (the count), and to inform the House about this". This motion is supported by D66 MP Jessica Van Eijs and CDA MP Maurits Von Martels.

MP Maurits Von Martels also asked the State Secretary whether the business community is now sufficiently on track to achieve the reduction in litter, but the State Secretary said it was "too early" to answer that.

State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven stated that she was going to investigate the environmental impact of can coating.

She advised the House of Representatives against voting for the first three motions. Regarding the fourth motion, by Dik-Faber, she left the decision to the House. The House of Representatives will vote on the motions on Thursday.
