Since 1 July 2021, there has finally been a deposit on small plastic bottles in the Netherlands. This is great news, as it contributes to reducing litter and improving the recycling of those small bottles.

In order to actually realise the positive environmental effects of the deposit system, it is of great importance that the deposit system is designed efficiently. Clarity and accessibility for the consumer are crucial here. The easier it is for the consumer to return beverage packaging, the more beverage packaging will be collected and recycled.

However, there are currently points of sale that do sell plastic bottles with a deposit, but do not return the deposit to the consumer when they want to return small plastic bottles there (e.g. some shops, cinemas, supermarkets, petrol stations). This is not consumer-friendly and significantly limits the number of collection points for plastic bottles.

We want to gain insight into this problem. And you can help us with that! We are launching a reporting point on this webpage, where you can indicate which points of sale refuse to return deposits.

You can fill in and share this Reporting Point up to and including 14 November.
